Sherwood Forest Wander

River Meden, Nr Budby

Writing this a little bit after that fact but only because I've been a little bit busy these past few days. Anyways, I decided I needed to get out and take advantage of the good weather we've been having, choosing to go on a 8 mile round hike into Sherwood Forest.

I began the hike from a car park on the National Cycle Route 6 as it was convenient and free. I began by following the cycle route west and then south all the way to the edge of Sherwood Forest. At this point, I then turned off the cycle route and onto one of the paths running through the forest. After a short while I turned off this path on to another slightly less well defined path before finally coming out by the Major Oak - the reputed hiding place of Robin Hood at one point.

I continued past the tree and began to follow a path which I hoped would take me back to the path I originally entered the forest on. It was at this point I began to really regret breaking one of my own rules by not bringing a map. The problem I was having wasn't so much that the area which I was in was particularly large, it just all looks quite similar and I became a bit disorientated, Luckily, I was on the right path, and I used a compass to check I was going in roughly the right direction.

Finally, I arrived back on the cycle path and made my steady way back to where I began. By this, in the heat I was definitely glad of the bottle of water I had brought along.

Overall it was a decent hike which allowed me to get out and enjoy the weather, which was my main aim. Although Sherwood Forest may not be as mystical or as forest-y, for want of a better word, as some might imagine, it is quite a pretty walk as well making its way through wood, scrub, and farmland. Although it might not be for a while, I will most likely walk this one again.
